Uwe Johnson - Anniversaries
After spending about six months reading Uwe Johnson's *Anniversaries* in Damion Searle's extraordinary English translation (a translation that, as a translator myself, I think is practically a masterclass in literary translation), I ended up compiling a character list to keep track of the novel's 400+ named characters. I started it simply for my own reference, mostly in order of first appearance but occasionally rearranging entries to make family and social relationships easier to follow. After spending about six months reading Uwe Johnson's *Anniversaries* in Damion Searle's extraordinary English translation (a translation that, as a translator myself, I think is practically a masterclass in literary translation), I ended up compiling a character list to keep track of the novel's 400+ named characters. I started it simply for my own reference, mostly in order of first appearance but occasionally rearranging entries to make family and social relationships easier to follow.
