October 12, 2023... World Sight Day is a global event which draws attention to blindness and vision impairment. It was originally initiated by the SightFirstCampaign of  Lions Club International  Foundation in 2000. It has since been integrated into VISION 2020 and is coordinated by the  International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness  (IAPB) in cooperation with the  World Health Organization . The Lion’s Club has remains active in promoting World Sight Day.

Most of the world’s blind population are older men and women in developing countries where access to basic vision treatment is scarce. Timely attention to cataracts, glaucoma and other chronic eye conditions to prevent blindness or sight impairment is essential. Media and medical or social action organizations hold events and programs to promote public awareness; there are also fundraising efforts and lobbying of governments to take specific actions.

The theme/call to action for 2023 is "Eye Care in the Workplace." Employers are encouraged to make eye health initiatives standard practice and promote eye health habits that benefit the well-being, safety and productivity of millions of employees.

The first step is prioritizing your own eye health. The next, motivating the world’s employers to provide quality eye care to their employees. From factory floors and office buildings to staff rooms and studios, eye care should be available, accessible and affordable to all.
