How do Germans generally perceive working as a Reinigungskraft? And what do you say when you meet someone again after already saying Hallo?
I’m a student, almost 20 years old, and I’ve been working as a Reinigungskraft for around 4 months. In the last 4–5 months, I’ve worked at 2–3 different locations within the same company, and I’ve noticed quite different reactions from people.
Some people are very friendly. They say „Guten Tag“, „Tschüss“, „Schönen Feierabend“, etc. Others see me walking past them and don’t say anything, even though it seems obvious that they’ve seen me.
It made me wonder: How do Germans generally perceive this kind of job? Is Reinigungskraft considered a low-status or “bad” job in Germany? Or is it just normal and people generally don’t think much about it?
I’m also wondering if the fact that I’m an international student might play a role, or if I’m simply overthinking normal German behaviour. 😅
There’s another thing I find a little awkward.
For example, when I enter someone’s office for the first time, I’ll say „Hallo“ or „Guten Tag“. Then I might see the same person again 10..20 minutes later in their office where i have to clean . Since we’ve already greeted each other, I feel a bit strange saying „Hallo“ again, so I might just say something like „Darf ich kurz den Müll sammeln?“
What do Germans normally do in this situation? Do you say „Hallo“ again, just smile/nod, or simply start talking without greeting again?
I’d be interested to hear how Germans actually see these situations, especially from people who have worked with Reinigungskräfte or have experience doing the job themselves. #local
