Transport for London has granted Uber and Wayve the first…

Transport for London has granted Uber and Wayve the first private-hire licences for autonomous taxi trips in London. The approval covers 15 Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with Wayve software. 🚕🤖

The vehicles may carry paying passengers, but a TfL-licensed safety driver must remain in the driver’s seat and intervene if necessary. Uber and Wayve said early trips are planned for later this summer.

The decision follows the UK government’s automated passenger-services pilot scheme, opened in May 2026. It requires government safety checks and local consent for operators.

TfL says it will monitor the service and can intervene if passenger safety is compromised. Uber and Wayve would need a separate automated passenger-services permit from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency before operating rides without a driver.
