🌊 NOAA says El Niño is continuing and is forecast to strengthen through the end of 2026. Its Climate Prediction Center puts the chance of a very strong event at 81% for October through December.
The Pacific climate pattern can shift tropical rainfall and the winter jet stream, increasing the odds of wetter conditions in parts of the western and southern United States. California’s coast could face a higher risk of flooding during strong storms and high-tide events. ⚠️
The forecast is probabilistic, not a guarantee of any particular winter outcome. NOAA says even the strongest El Niño events do not produce typical effects everywhere, and experts caution that the popular term “super El Niño” is not a separate formal ENSO phase.
NASA satellite observations showed the 2026 event strengthening in June, including elevated sea-surface heights in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific. NOAA expects El Niño to persist through early spring 2027, with its next diagnostic discussion scheduled for August 13. 🛰️
