What Degree should I get???
Hey everybody!! I'm a student at a smaller liberal arts school, I at first came in to get my Bachelor's in Biomedical Science (I wanted to be an MD, now I'm think PhD) and I was getting a minor in chemistry. Well my original advisor moved to another school and I switched to a different advisor. PS. the advisors at my school are also the professors. My new advisor is a chemistry professor and really pushed me to switch my major to Biochemistry even though I was unsure of what I really wanted to do.
Well, if I switched to a biochemistry degree then I needed to take advanced inorganic chemistry (currently in), which had the same lecture time as Evolution (needed for a biomedical degree) and the same lab time as the second semester of human anatomy and physiology (I really really wanted to take this). I figured he's older and knows better so I just kind of listened without talking to another professor. Turns out my new advisor is known for pressuring students to switch degrees from biology to biochemistry. If I would have continued on the biomedical track I would have graduated on time (next spring) but because I took my new advisors advice, no matter which degree route I go I have to push back graduation a year.
So here's my question to the biology community: I'm thinking about getting my PhD in either Microbiology or Molecular Biology, would it be better to revert back to my original plan of Biomedical major with a Chemistry minor? Or should I continue getting a Biochemistry Major??? I was talking to the lab manager who also fell for the bio to biochem guidance (by the same prof) and she says I should do Biomedical with a chem minor because she is having a hard time getting accepted into biology programs with a biochemistry degree. Since I'm going to be here for another year no matter what I can complete all the classes for both degree but I can only get awarded one, so which should I choose???
FYI Biomedical degrees are very biology focused here, like you have to take biology classes of every discipline of biology. While Biochemistry is a good mix of all sciences. Major differences I'm looking at is that I need physics and calculus for a biochemistry degree but I don't need it for the biomedical degree.
