Indonesian rescuers are searching the Java Sea after the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 overturned while travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin. At least 102 people had been rescued and one death reported in early accounts. 🚢
The vessel’s manifest listed 243 people: 213 passengers and 30 crew. Its captain had reported rough seas and that the ferry was listing before contact was lost.
Search teams were heading toward the vessel’s last known position, assisted by nearby vessels. Authorities said the number aboard could differ from the manifest, so the toll remained provisional. 🌊
The ferry is designed to carry passengers and vehicles. Reporting described bad weather but had not established the cause of the overturning; the search and verification of those aboard were continuing.
