my nuts mix only smell dusty. like crayons almost. is that what "rancid" means?

\-expired in may 2025
\-is opened
\-no other visual signs
\-still a bit hard texture wise (didnt go soft)
\-have been in the pantry since 2024 in weather that is really hot in summer, and really cold in winter.
do i throw them out? im getting mixed signals from the internet. also I don't know what rancid smells like so any help on that front would be greatly appreciated.
update: i have tried them and while their smell was ok, the half cashew i chewed and threw out left a sour taste in my tongue. its been 10 minutes. thank you all for your help!! i now know what rancid is for nuts
