🌧️ Record rainfall east of Tokyo flooded communities in Chiba Prefecture, leaving at least four people dead and one missing, according to officials. The Japan Meteorological Agency said rainfall reached unprecedented levels in parts of the area.
Chiba City recorded 11.5 centimetres (4.5 inches) of rain in one hour and Sakura recorded 9.7 centimetres (3.8 inches), both records. JMA downgraded its highest heavy-rain warning in more than a dozen municipalities after rain eased Friday morning, but forecast further rain later in the day.
More than 80 homes were flooded and about 230,000 residents were advised to seek shelter. Power outages affected about 23,000 homes Friday morning, down from 68,000 earlier. ⚠️
Flooded rail lines stranded about 4,000 people at Soga station and thousands more overnight at Narita Airport. Train services partly resumed with delays, while flights at Narita were operating normally Friday morning.
