France has been plagued by unrest since Tuesday (27/06) after police shot dead a 17-year-old Algerian teenager in Nanterre, a suburb of Paris. The death of Nahel M, 17, has sparked riots in cities across France, as well as in Nanterre, west of Paris, where he grew up. Nahel was an only child raised by his mother. He worked as a driver for a food delivery service and he also played in rugby league. His education was considered chaotic. He enrolled in a college in Suresnes, not far from where he lived, to become an electrician. Those who knew him said he was well-loved in Nanterre, where he lived with his mother, Mounia, and apparently never knew his father. His college attendance record was poor. He had no criminal record, but he was known to the police. He always kissed his mother before he went to work, plus the words "I love you, Mom". Shortly after nine in the morning last Tuesday (27/06), he was shot in the chest at close range for disobeying police orders to stop his Mercedes car after a traffic violation.
