We talk about media literacy being dead all the time and i'm so serious about this, the people who genuinely agree with the blue curtains take are a prime example. People like that do not know how to engage with literature.
And of course, not every detail has to have a deep, philosophical meaning. But a simple description of blue curtains could mean so much to a story. It could be foreshadowing, it could give insight into a character, it could be used to set the tone or build atmosphere.
It could also mean nothing, art doesn't have to have a meaning all the time.
Here's the thing these people don't seem to consider: everything in a book is put there intentionally. It wasn't typed away by a monkey pressing random keys until words began to form. It's in the book for a reason, and it may not have a deep meaning but that doesn't mean there is no vallue to reflecting upon it and analysing.
