Hungary’s Paks Nuclear Power Plant was operating at…

Hungary’s Paks Nuclear Power Plant was operating at sharply reduced output on 3 August after record-low Danube levels constrained cooling water. The plant was producing 240 MW rather than its usual 2,000 MW, while its final operating turbine was kept running temporarily. 🌊

Paks is Hungary’s only nuclear power station, with four reactors and a licensed site output of 2,000 MW. It uses water drawn directly from the Danube for cooling.

The shortfall has increased Hungary’s reliance on regional electricity imports and renewable generation. The government has also sought electricity savings from major users and households, according to the Associated Press. ⚡

A complete shutdown remained possible on 4 August if river conditions did not improve. Persistent drought, extreme heat and no significant rainfall forecast were continuing to keep Danube water levels low.
