We just did a free one-month trial of Walmart+ (mostly to get free Peacock for the Winter Olympics), and the cancellation process was less than optimal. My online account -- and Walmart's email reminders that the free trial was ending soon -- all indicated the renawal was March 10, so as I often do with free trials, I set a reminder for myself and cancelled on March 9...
...only to be billed the next month's fee on March 10 anyway. I just finished chatting with customer service, where I was told that "normally the membership is a non-refundable charge," but that they would "make an exception for me." They didn't respond to my feedback that their practice was deceptive -- nowhere was any cancellation deadline listed other than multiple references to renewal on 3/10 -- so I'm posting here in an effort to provide more public feedback.
I use free trials all the time to test things out and, obviously, in the interest of frugality, but (perhaps surprisingly?) I've never had an experience like this before with any other service. Occasionally I've missed the cancellation window, and services are usually happy to refund. But when I cancel before the renewal date, I've never been billed after that... nor dealt with such an obtuse response. #finance source
