Some of you may be wondering how the photo of My Old Man was taken
if there were snipers everywhere and he was having pot shots taken at him
all the time he was on the rooftop
He was on patrol and found a jewellers shop that had been blown to bits
In amongst the rubble he found a bag of silver the size of a football
He said the value of the silver probably equated to 6 months of his salary as a
private soldier in the British Army back then in the 40s
So what could he buy ?
A nice watch - and draw attention to himself wearing something
he could ill afford and gained by looting ?
The punishment for looting was that you could be shot on sight on the spot
No questions asked
Nearby was a photographer
He said to the bloke " you and me up on the roof for a picture "
The bloke gave a " no Johnny no Johnny ! " point blank refusal
Until my dad plonked the bag of silver on the counter
( not the Judas bag of silver ) and the blokes eyes nearly popped out of his head
My Dad said the photographer was absolutely shitting himself on the roof top with the
bullets flying around which made my Dad laugh
My dads "tin hat" stories never cease to amaze me
