Fifty-five years ago Willy Brandt fell to his knees in Warsaw, in a gesture appealing to forgiveness for German crimes against Poland in World War II. While this was huge news in Germany, and international news at the time - I was a kid in the US, and Brandt was the first Kanzler I was aware of - the incident was largely blacked out in Poland. I quite liked this article by Donald Tusk that appeared five years ago in Süddeutsche Zeitung:
