Skin And Soul

Chapter 3: The Interlude of Light
The weeks that followed blurred into the happiest season of Azazel’s eternal existence.
Elena became a permanent fixture in John’s life. They began with simple coffees to thank him for his bravery, which evolved into quiet dinners at his apartment, and eventually, walks through the city parks beneath the amber glow of the evening lamps.
John found himself completely captivated by her. She didn't talk much about her past, but she possessed a profound, ancient kind of wisdom, and she listened to him talk about his blueprints and machining processes as if he were explaining the mysteries of the cosmos.
"You have a good heart, John," she told him one evening as they watched the rain pelt against his apartment window. She was sitting on the couch, stitching a tear in his work jacket.
"I just do what I can," John said, looking at her with a gentle, unmistakable tenderness. He reached over, placing his hand over hers. "But since I met you, Elena... the city doesn't feel so heavy anymore. I feel like I have a reason to come home."
Azazel felt a profound ache in her chest. By day, she loved him as a mortal, tasting the sweetness of his laughter and the warmth of his embrace. By night, after leaving his apartment, she would shed the fragile skin of Elena, take to the stormy skies, and brutally slaughter the hounds of the underworld that were beginning to sniff around her territory.
She knew she was living on borrowed time. The Lower Realm did not tolerate desertion, especially from one of its fiercest generals.
