This is a Canadian trilogy by Deborah Ellis. I saw the movie version of The Breadwinner, the first book in the trilogy, when it came out in the movies. I decided to skip that and then read the second and third books - Parvana’s Journey and Mud City.
This isn’t so much as a book review because I don’t really like writing those… but I have personally been in some turmoil, and reading these books has been very uplifting. These books helped me realize my problems are small, and I was touched by the humanity of the children in these novels. Little things stood out to me that showed me how much love we are all capable of, and that we get chipped away by the harshness of our realities. I was crying at points (more so in Mud City than in Parvana’s Journey). I know these stories are set in a terribly harsh landscape, and maybe “uplifting” is an odd word to choose. But seeing the humanity here made me feel encouraged to see that there are good people in the world, even in the most dire circumstances. I recommend. #entertainment source
