Have you ever stopped and wondered how many of the thoughts running through your mind today were actually thoughts you consciously chose?
I have spent years studying the difference between thought and thinking, and one of the greatest realizations I have experienced is that just because a thought enters my mind does not mean I have to believe it.
Think about how often your mind reminds you of something embarrassing from years ago, predicts something terrible that might happen tomorrow, or tells you that you are not capable of accomplishing something you desire.
Did you consciously choose those thoughts? Or did they simply appear?
Our minds are constantly producing thoughts based on past experiences, beliefs, emotions, and familiar patterns. Many of us unknowingly accept these thoughts as facts without ever questioning their validity.
And this is where awareness becomes so valuable.
There is a difference between experiencing a thought and consciously thinking about that thought.
A thought may tell you that you are going to fail. Conscious thinking allows you to question why you believe that and whether there is any truth supporting it.
A thought may remind you of who you used to be. Conscious thinking allows you to recognize who you are becoming.
I have learned that I am not obligated to entertain every thought my mind produces. I can acknowledge it, question its relevance, and consciously choose where I invest my energy.
Today, when an uncomfortable thought appears, pause and ask yourself whether it deserves your attention.
Because your thoughts may influence your emotions, but your awareness gives you the opportunity to influence what happens next.
