Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama has died at 97 in Tokyo, her studio announced. Kusama was known worldwide for polka dots, pumpkins and immersive mirror-room installations. 🎨
Born in Matsumoto in 1929, Kusama moved to New York in 1958 and became active in the postwar avant-garde. Her work ranged across painting, soft sculpture, performance, fiction and poetry.
Her 1965 Infinity Mirror Room—Phalli's Field transformed repeated forms into a reflective environment that incorporates the viewer. She went on to create more than 20 distinct Infinity Mirror Rooms, according to the Hirshhorn Museum.
Kusama's exhibitions later drew large international audiences, connecting ideas developed in her early work with participatory museum installations. Her death was announced after she died in a Tokyo hospital on 14 August. 🕯️
