This won't work for every airport obviously, but it does for my city and some other places I've been.
I live in Manchester, UK. Most airports will have airport hotels nearby that are easily accessible to and from the terminal. For Manchester, this is the case. It's about a ten minute walk through a sky walkway, where I've seen other airports that have a free shuttle or tram service.
When getting an uber to the airport, i get it to the parking lot of one of the nearest hotels, then it's just that short walk.
Getting an uber directly to the terminal from where i live is about £25 depending on the time of day. That same exact trip to the hotel just outside the terminal is about £12.
I do this everywhere i can, going to and from the airport. Always look to see if there are nearby hotels (easily accessible to the terminal you need) and you'll see the vast difference in price getting picked up or dropped off there.
Edit to add: I don't have kids. I don't ever travel with anyone who has kids. I only ever have a small backpack and a suitcase at most personally and my friends i have travelled with tend to meet me there or have similar if we're riding together. Yes, i can see why 10 extra minutes with a cart full of luggage and grumpy kids would be worth not using this hack.
Hopefully it does help a few people reconsider how to beat ubers algorithms. Just like when i leave a concert or play or something similar. Walking ten minutes down the road means you're suddenly out of the surge pricing area and you're not fighting a crowd trying to get an uber. #entertainment source
