The Democratic Republic of the Congo has begun giving the Ervebo Ebola vaccine to health workers and other frontline responders during its record outbreak. ๐
The campaign is aimed first at people most exposed to the virus and contacts of patients. More than 50,000 doses have arrived; WHO approved 70,000 doses, with about 20,000 reserved for a trial.
Ervebo is licensed for Ebola disease caused by Zaire ebolavirus, but the current outbreak is driven by Bundibugyo virus. It is therefore being used under compassionate use while researchers assess whether it provides cross-protection. ๐งช
The country had recorded 5,713 confirmed cases and 2,744 deaths as of Tuesday. Vaccination is planned across 14 health zones, while trials of Ervebo and Bundibugyo-targeted candidates continue.
