I want to store my van for 3 years. Advice - has anyone done this?

We might not be able to take our van out of the country while we're living abroad for a few years. The possible plan is to leave in storage for 3 years, declaring it "off road" for that time so that we don't have to pay any costs.

Does anyone have any experience in doing this?
