Hurricane Lowell brought damaging winds and heavy rain to…

Hurricane Lowell brought damaging winds and heavy rain to Hawaii’s western islands on Tuesday 🌧️ Kauai and Niihau were under hurricane warnings, while Oahu was under a tropical-storm warning.

The National Weather Service said Lowell had made its closest approach to the main Hawaiian Islands overnight and was moving away. Tropical-storm-force winds still stretched roughly 200 miles from the center, with gusts reported up to 80 mph on Kauai.

Flooding, mudslides, dangerous surf and possible tornadoes remained the central risks. Officials said parts of Kauai could receive more than 20 inches of storm-total rain, while surf on Kauai and Niihau could reach 20 to 30 feet 🌊

Governor Josh Green ordered closures of public schools, government offices and some university and judiciary facilities on Oahu and in Kauai County. Emergency operations continued as forecasters expected Lowell to weaken over the following days.

The full scale of damage and final rainfall totals was not yet known. Residents were advised to follow local warnings as flooding and coastal hazards continued. ⚠️
