🔥 A pulse coral. The contractions you see here? That’s it breathing. But why you may ask?
1. To capture food from the water (we’re talking microscopic food here) 2. Circulate oxygen through its tissues 3. Survive; it’s a literal survival mechanism that has been perfected over millions of years. This particular type of coral is from the sofa coral family, meaning it does not have a skeleton. It’s presence on a reef usually signals a healthy ecosystem; meaning that if it thrives, the reef thrives. Many people think corals are rocks but truly they are living breathing and feeling creatures that deserve our protection now more then ever. By @ institute.marineresearch #nature
