Fiji has declared HIV a national health emergency, escalating its response after a sharp rise in infections. 🇫🇯
UNAIDS estimates new infections rose twelvefold between 2010 and 2025. It says about 9,100 people were living with HIV in 2025; 39% knew their status and 22% were receiving antiretroviral treatment.
📰 Among cases with a known transmission route, more than half were associated with sexual transmission and more than 42% with injecting drug use. UNAIDS says stigma, testing gaps and unsafe injecting have compounded the response challenge.
The government has announced expanded prevention, testing and treatment, including wider PrEP access and possible needle-and-syringe legislation. A Cabinet subcommittee will address implementation barriers, with UNAIDS and community groups supporting the response. 🩺
