What is dopamine fasting?
I recently did a 48 hours Dopamine detox.
I did it because of personal motivation.
But I also wanted to know if it really worked or not.
Dopamine is a neurotransmitter made in the brain. Basically, it acts as a chemical messenger between neurons.
Dopamine is released when your brain is expecting a reward.
My dopamine detox was strictly information based.
I avoided taking information from any source.
Things that were not allowed:
- Reading (physical books as well as Kindle)
- Watching (TV/Netflix/YouTube/etc.)
- Social Media
- Screens
- Music
- Calls
Time duration - 48 hours
No external information - new or repeat
Reward - Anything you like (mine was an iced coffee)
I only allowed myself to have a notebook & pen with me.
Writing & journaling is allowed.
Results:
- No compulsive actions like checking devices constantly
- No constant noise in the back of the mind
- No lack of alertness or attentiveness
- No zombie look at the end of the day
- No feeling of being energy depleted
- No constant heaviness in the brain
- No being annoyed at everything
- No anxiety & negative feelings
- No FOMO (crazyyy, right?)
- Less reactive behavior
- No headaches
- No tired eyes
- Easily staying in the present moment
- Got a lot of pending work done
- So much more focus & clarity
- Got to relax all weekend
- So much more free time
All in all, it was totally worth it.
I feel like it's going to be a weekly thing at a minimum.
If you constantly feel overwhelmed on a daily basis, I'd definitely recommend that you try it.
Do it for a minimum of 24 hours and you'll notice the difference in your day.
