SBGG Awards
I've been curious for a while about the Awards data on BGG. In particular, which games have the most awards?
The BGG API (https://boardgamegeek.com/wiki/page/BGG_XML_API2) does not return awards for games. So, what I did was download the BGG CSV file (https://boardgamegeek.com/data_dumps/bg_ranks) and write a program to get each game and for each one grab the html, get the awards out of <awards-module>, and then parse each one to see if it was a Winner, Nominee, Recommended (Special Mention), or Finalist (Runner-Up, 2nd Place, d'Argent, Silver, 3rd Place, Bronze, etc.). I also had a total column that removed "duplicate" entries. For example, 2009 Gouden Ludo Winner and 2009 Gouden Ludo Nominee would count as one entry for the total.
At the time I downloaded the BGG CSV file, it had 162,686 games. It took 7-10 seconds to get, parse and record each game. That means it would take about 19 days to run through every game. I let it run through the first 10,000 games and I was seeing by that point that there were almost no awards being associated with any of the games, so I decided to cut it off at that point. So, if you are curious about the other 152,686 games, sorry.
I discovered, while working on this, that BGG does not track all awards. For example, the Deutscher Spiele Preis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutscher_Spiele_Preis) hasn't been recorded on BGG since the early 1990s despite giving awards every year up to 2023. I do not know how many awards like this are missing from BGG.
Note, the data only reflects awards that are actually recorded on BGG. Many newer games either haven't received any awards, yet, or they aren't recorded on BGG yet. For example, the darling of 2024, Arcs, has zero awards on BGG.
Also, it should be noted that there isn't a 1-1 correspondence between nominations and wins. For example, 7 Wonders has 24 nominations and 24 wins. But, if you actually examine the BGG data, we see that not all wins have a nomination listed and vice versa. I presume any game that won was nominated, but if so, it is only sometimes recorded on BGG.
Basically, the analysis is only as good as the data and the data is clearly incomplete and probably inaccurate in place. Nevertheless, I'll go ahead and share my findings.
