I’m a foreign woman in a long-distance relationship with a Korean man, and I would really like to hear honest opinions from Koreans about this situation.
My boyfriend is a Korean man in his 40s, and his sister-in-law is also Korean. Recently, he spent almost an entire day with his sister-in-law. They went to a spa/water park together in Busan and spent time together. The problem is that he told me he was going to be at the hospital, but he was actually with her. When I found out, he said he lied because he knew I would judge him and that he didn’t want to deal with my reaction.
Then something similar happened again a few days later. He told me that in the evening he would be meeting some priests from another city. Later, he sent me a picture/video from a bowling place. There was a woman in the picture, and I recognized her as his sister-in-law. When I asked who she was, he said only, “Family members,” instead of telling me directly that it was his sister-in-law.
My question is not simply whether a Korean man spending time alone with his sister-in-law is normal. I understand that Korean families can be close. What I find strange is that he has now hidden the fact that he was with her more than once and gave me completely different explanations about where he was.
From a Korean cultural perspective, would it be considered normal for a man to spend a whole day alone with his sister-in-law, including going to a spa/water park or bowling together? And would it be normal for him to hide this from his girlfriend because he thinks she might judge him? I’m especially interested in hearing from Koreans living in Korea. I’m trying to understand what would be considered normal family closeness versus behavior that would make a Korean girlfriend/wife suspicious. #local source
