Novels about protagonists plagued by a vague desire which they struggle to clarify?

I'll give Proust's Recherche as a prime example. Marcel's looking for *something*... he roams through the realms of romantic love and high society looking for it. Only in the end does he discover that what he's looking for is in artistic expression.
