For many millennials and early Gen Zs, Skype was the OG video call platform that connected us across the globe. But after years of declining relevance in an increasingly crowded market, Microsoft officially retired Skype on May 5, 2025, closing the curtain on 22 years of digital connection and nostalgia.
Remember those late-night video calls and βpingβ sounds that defined the early 2000s? Skype launched its beta in 2003, letting us make free PC-to-PC calls. By 2005, it had 40 million users and brought us SkypeOut and video chatting. After eBay and later Microsoft took the reins, Skype soared to 660 million users by 2010 and ruled online calls. But as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and WhatsApp surged ahead, Skype quietly faded.
Following its February announcement, Microsoft is officially closing the chapter on Skype. Users are encouraged to transition to Microsoft Teams, with data migration available until January 2026. This marks a strategic move by Microsoft to unify its communication platforms under Teams.
