More than 1,000 greater crested terns have been found dead in three mass-mortality events on offshore islands in South Australia, in what Premier Peter Malinauskas called a “significant escalation” of H5 bird flu. 🐦

The deaths were presumed to be linked to H5, with aerial surveillance identifying events on Troubridge Island and the Pages Islands off Kangaroo Island. Authorities are also investigating a suspected H5 case in a little penguin on Kangaroo Island.

The affected islands are important wildlife areas, including habitat for Australian sea lions, long-nosed fur seals and little penguins. Surveillance crews are checking for affected mammals as well as seabirds; no mammal mass-mortality event has been reported.

There are still no H5 detections in poultry or livestock, and authorities say the risk to people remains low. In Tasmania, testing is under way after 28 dead little penguins and three dead crested terns were found on King Island. 🧪
