Something I just realised doing my A level lit revision and thought was so clever!
In my class, two of the themes we focus on for Othello are race and cuckoldry—when Iago says “a black ram is tupping your white ewe”, is it a double meaning?
he is, on one hand, dehumanising him, and on the other, which is my discovery, he is foreshadowing the cuck plot? In early modern england, I believe horns (or the ✌️sign) were meant to symbolise cuck men. Rams have horns, of-course, and Othello is later manipulated into believing he is being cucked by Cassio. I thought it was cool. 🙂 #entertainment source
