🧠 The False Positive Paradox (The Rare Disease Test)

A rare disease affects 1 in 1,000 people (0.1%). A test for it is 99% accurate (1% false positive rate). You test positive. What is the probability that you actually have the disease: 99% or something else?

💬 Does knowing this change how you interpret medical screening tests? Share your thoughts! (Solution in first comment 👇)

💡 SCIENCE BEHIND THE ILLUSION:

Only about 9%! Imagine 1,000 people: 1 has the disease (tests positive). Of the 999 healthy people, 1% false positive = ~10 test positive! Out of 11 positive results, only 1 actually has the illness (1/11 ≈ 9%). Bayes' Theorem reminds us that base rate dominates test accuracy!
