What are the most “morally improving” classic novels?
I am very curious to hear the common sentiment on which works of literature tend to leave the biggest impact on the attentive reader’s moral character, “giving ardour to virtue and confidence to truth” as Samuel Johnson once put it.
Tolstoy springs to mind as a candidate; but I would be delighted to hear your own tales of books that have left you more morally developed than they found you.
