💊 Doctors in England can now prescribe Enhertu for…

đź’Š Doctors in England can now prescribe Enhertu for eligible patients with a specific incurable breast cancer, after the drug had previously been judged too expensive for routine NHS use in England.

Enhertu, the brand name for trastuzumab deruxtecan, is used for certain HER2-defined cancers. In the DESTINY-Breast04 trial of previously treated HER2-low metastatic breast cancer, median overall survival was 23.4 months with the drug versus 16.8 months with physician’s-choice chemotherapy.

The decision expands access for a group of patients whose cancer cannot be removed by surgery or has spread. The BBC report says patients in Scotland have had NHS access since 2023; Wales is expected to follow, while the guidance does not automatically apply in Northern Ireland. 🏥

Treatment remains limited to patients who meet the relevant clinical and biomarker criteria. It also requires safety monitoring: the medicine’s prescribing information warns of potentially serious interstitial lung disease or pneumonitis.

The change takes effect as clinicians in England begin prescribing under the new access arrangements. Eligibility and treatment decisions remain with specialist cancer teams. 🔬
