Alessandro manzoni's "the betrothed" I finished reading…

Alessandro manzoni's "the betrothed"

I finished reading this wonderful novel the other day, and id like to share some spoiler free thoughts and see if anyone else has anything tonday. Ive never really seen this one discussed much in the English world at all. Though it is of course a staple in Italy from what I gather. I was pretty curious goingnin since I had never even heard of it. Unfortunately from what I understand it loses something special in translation, but for what its worth, I still really enjoyed it.

For those interested, it is a story about an engaged couple from a small village in 17th century Italy. A currupt nobleman, wanting to win a bet, abuses his power to block their marriage amd generally wreak havoc on them. The couple are forced to flee with the help of a local monk, and are eventually split up and each get caught up in their own misadventures, including a few well known catastrophoc histoical events which struck Europe/ italy during that time (which are portrayed amazingly in the most horrifically vivid detail backed by meticulous research on part of the author)

I found the book to be quite readable. It can be quite humourous at times. It is a scathing satire/critique of both curruption and amorality among the elite, and the often terrifying and stupid nature of mob behavior, sumplimented with wonderfully wholesome themes of love and faith. Without a doubt, it will leave you chuckling (or horrified) at how little the human race has changed across the centuries. Particularly those with clear memories of the covid 19 days, i might add lol.

Perhaps one of the best parts of the experience was the myriad of rich side charachters our protagonists meets who all feel alive and full. In fact, all in all, the only real critisism I can really think to levy against the book is that some of the side charachters were so interesting and engaging, but end up being criminally underutilized in my opinion. I really wanted more from some of them!

The historical digressions the book is known for werent anywhere near as big and dry as I expected from reading about the book. They were all genuinely interesting for the most part and provided extremely vivid and engaging context for the rather simple and straight forward narrative.

All in all, id certainly recommend it, and I think it's unfortunate the novel is not more widely enjoyed in the English world.
