issing in Catherine and Heathclifs relationship?
With the movie coming out, my friend reccomended me to read the book so we could see the movie together. I can see why the book is held in such high regards and why we still talk about it almost 200 years later. But i found that my friends and I had very different interpretations of the book.
The differences in our opinions stem from a disagreement on if Catherine romantically loved Heathclif or not. Heathclif is obsessively in love with Catherine but I see Catherines love to be platonic in nature. The love you'd feel for a sibling instead of a potential lover. This drastically changes so much of the book for me.
I remember a part were Catherine mentioned that she didn't find Heathclif attractive but she found Edgar both attractive and interesting to be around. Nelly frames Catherine's love to be for the wrong reasons because looks and money can change. She's not wrong on that point but Catherine mentioned that a huge bonus of marrying Edgar is to get both her and Heathclif away from their abusive brother.
When Heathclif came back, Catherine had been happily married for 3 years and was desperate to have her brother back in her life. She accepted him for his flaws and bad behavior because he's family, not because of some unrequited love. And I think you see this when Isabella admits to having a crush on Heathclif. Catherine makes a whole show of trying to show Isabella how terrible of a person he is. And Heathclif agrees with her.
The story almost reads like a horror book to me rather then a romance. Heathclif does a lot of terrible and greedy things under the idea that his love was taken from him. But I dont think his love was ever reciprocated. It feels like an incel revenge story at times.
So what am I missing? Important context, I listened to the audio book while at work so it's very possible I missed a subtle line here or there.
