Pastafarianism, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It started in 2005 when Bobby Henderson, a physics grad, wrote an open letter to the Kansas State Board of Education, which was weighing whether to teach intelligent design alongside evolution. He argued that if intelligent design deserved equal time, so should his belief in a Flying Spaghetti Monster who created the universe.
It's a parody religion, meant to satirize the push to teach creationism in public schools, but it has taken on a life of its own. Its trademarks include:
- **Pirate regalia**, since pastafarians hold that pirates were the original, peaceful followers
- **Colanders as religious headwear**, which has led to several legal cases over wearing them in government ID photos
- **"The Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster"**, Henderson's 2006 book
- **Ending prayers with "R'amen"**
- **Global warming explained** by the decline in pirates
Some countries, like the Netherlands and New Zealand, have allowed colander photos or even officiating of weddings by Pastafarian ministers, while others have rejected recognition as a real religion.
