The disciples observe Jesus at prayer and are moved to ask Him: Lord, teach us to pray. In response, Jesus gives them the Our Father—not merely a formula but the pattern of all Christian prayer. Every petition reveals the heart of the Son turned toward the Father and teaches us to align our desires with God's will.
"Father"—this single word revolutionizes our relationship with the Almighty. We are not slaves addressing a tyrant but children speaking to a loving parent. "Hallowed be Your name" places worship before petition. "Your kingdom come" surrenders our agendas to divine sovereignty. "Give us each day our daily bread" expresses radical dependence, while the plea for forgiveness and deliverance acknowledges our frailty.
Jesus' prayer life was the source of His mission. Before every major decision, He withdrew to pray. The Our Father invites us into that same communion with the Father. It is the school of prayer where we learn to desire what God desires, trust what God provides, and forgive as God forgives.
