In Bram Stoker's novel... I never understood why Helsing praised the Count and why Mina pitied him!!!

The Count before the transformation: He was a sadistic, bloodthirsty, manipulative, impaler and ruthless monster who chose cursed immortality and the defeat of death and God by serving the Devil and learning black magic at the Scholomance to perpetuate his dominance and merciless sadism.

The Count after the transformation: He is a parasitic, demonic, un dead, rapist, abuser, murderer, child-eater, and enslaver.

This is the Count whom Helsing described as great and whose soul Mina pitied! Not to mention what he did to their friends and loved ones, Jonathan, Lucy and Quincy.

What was Stoker thinking, then, and what did he want to say in his novel?
