I don't know if anyone besides @octo would find this…

I don't know if anyone besides would find this interesting, but i was pretty blown away. Also, I'm sure this post is so nerdy that my 404 score will go down even more:

TL;DR:

ISSUE: The interface stopped working and I could not change the FM stations.

My AI coding partner remotely accessed a Mac mini through Chrome Remote Desktop, identified an undocumented USB interface on a 15W FM transmitter, reverse-engineered its serial protocol, and successfully tuned it from macOS - without the manufacturer’s Windows software.
I just had one of the most epic troubleshooting sessions ever.

________
I own a NIORFNIO NIO-T15B FM transmitter whose physical frequency buttons stopped working. It has a Micro-USB port labeled “PC CONTROL,” but there was almost no useful documentation explaining what it did - especially on macOS.

We connected the transmitter to a Mac mini, then gave the AI controlled access through an existing Chrome Remote Desktop session. From there, we methodically inspected the Mac’s USB devices and discovered:

(Not Fun Part):
The transmitter exposes a CH340/CH341 USB-to-serial interface.
macOS already had a compatible built-in driver.
The control port appeared as /dev/cu.usbserial-1460.
Communication runs at 9600 baud, 8N1.
The device requires a hidden connection handshake.
It identifies itself as a NIORFNIO T15 with hardware and firmware version information.
Its undocumented commands can read and configure frequency, RF power, stereo mode, temperature, forward power, and reflected power.

FUN PART:
We then reverse-engineered the frequency command, restored the transmitter from 94.1 to 89.7 MHz, researched the least-congested FM channels around ZIP code 33436 using current FCC station records, and remotely tuned it to 102.9 MHz.
No Windows PC. No manufacturer utility. No driver download. Just macOS, USB serial analysis, methodical testing, and some seriously capable AI assistance.

This felt like having an RF technician, reverse engineer, macOS specialist, and pair programmer working beside me at the same time. Absolutely epic.

awesomeness 🤘... I'm nerding out big time... I still have an old 3w FM transmitter I built years ago just to mess with people listening to radio in their cars 😂 . that was pure hardware hacking. few weeks ago I reversed engineered an old award winning IOS synth app and found inside a fairly old but still active piece of Vietnamese spyware... I was pretty shocked and confused by the fact that it had been running in 3 of my devices for about 5-6yrs 😵
