I always disagreed with the idea that Nighthawks is meant to be uncomfortable and isolating. For me, it's a comforting painting.
People say the look of strangers in the cafe is supposed to feel cold, distant, isolating, lonely. But it's the opposite for me. It feels like these strangers, who might not all know each other, found a nice little moment to relax and have a little bit of company before heading home. I bet it's nice and warm in that cafe and they're all glad they went there that night.
