🌀 Hawaii is preparing for Tropical Storm Lala, which was forecast on Friday, August 14, 2026, to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches the Big Island. A hurricane warning covered Hawaii County, while tropical-storm warnings covered Maui, Molokai and Kahoolawe.

Lala was about 420 miles southeast of Hilo with sustained winds near 60 mph, according to reporting based on NOAA advisories. Forecast hazards included damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding, high surf and possible storm surge.

Authorities warned that rainfall could reach 8–12 inches across Maui and the Big Island, with higher local totals. Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency as agencies prepared for potential power outages, road closures and communications disruptions. 🌧️

A hurricane warning means hurricane conditions are expected somewhere in the warned area; it is issued ahead of tropical-storm-force winds so preparations can be completed. Forecasts and official instructions may change as Lala’s track and strength evolve. ⚠️
