Demis Hassabis is leaving day-to-day leadership of Google DeepMind to become its chair and Alphabet’s chief scientist. 🧠
Koray Kavukcuoglu, Google DeepMind’s chief technology officer, will become senior vice-president and lead the unit’s operations while reporting to Sundar Pichai.
The change separates longer-term AI research and strategy from management of the group developing Gemini models and related products. Google DeepMind was formed in 2023 by combining DeepMind with Google Brain.
Hassabis will also continue to lead Isomorphic Labs. The reshuffle comes as Jeff Dean and several other senior Google AI figures depart to create Discovery Loop.
The move keeps Google DeepMind’s stated mission unchanged, but places Kavukcuoglu in charge of execution at a pivotal point in Google’s competition with OpenAI and Anthropic. ⚙️
