For my birthday a few months ago, I bought myself a new duvet cover. It was adorable, and had cats and flowers on it, and I really loved it. But unfortunately I'm a very oily person, and I'm bedridden with ME/CFS, so after a few months it came out of the wash with bleached spots. I had no idea why, but then learned that apparently skin oils can bleach fabric? It was 100% cotton so I hoped it would last a long time, but unfortunately it was ruined pretty quickly.
So, does anyone have any brand recommendations for a cute and high quality duvet cover that won't get ruined quickly? Or recommendations for keeping blankets from getting ruined like that? Is there a specific type of material I should be looking for? A certain laundry soap I should use? I'm not crazy about polyester, but if that's what's going to last, I can settle. Also I'm open to a comforter as well. I initially chose a duvet cover because my comforter is still mostly fine, it just looks beat up, and the duvet covers were cheaper than a new comforter.
I am on a budget, but I really want my bed to look nice if I have to spend my whole life in it. Any advice would be so appreciated! I've never had new bedding before, always thrifted stuff that was a little dingy already, so I don't know the first thing about choosing the right bedding and keeping it nice ๐ฃ
UPDATE: was anyone going to tell me avobenzone can stain your clothing and bedding orange, or was I just supposed to find that out myself ๐ Earlier when I pulled out the duvet cover and saw orange faded looking marks on it, I had no clue why, but my searches led me to believe it was facial oil. I hadn't washed the duvet cover yet, so I assumed it just didn't hold up well to me but THEN later I looked at the rest of the load of laundry, and several tshirts were similarly stained! I've washed these many times and not had any issue, and I'm using clear unscented detergent with no fabric softener or anything else. Nothing should be staining my clothes! So after a lot more searching, I saw a stain that looked orangey and kinda bleached like mine, and it said it was caused by sunscreen. I'm the color of a piece of paper, so I use sunscreen every day, but I happened to run out of my regular one a few days ago, and I used a random one we had in the cabinet. I guess my normal one doesn't have avobenzone, which is what causes the stains. So! I will be using the same sunscreen until I die, and I think I'll repurchase the duvet cover I had before, because it was affordable, cute, 100% cotton, and seemed high quality until I ruined it ๐ฌ thank you all for the suggestions! If I ever end up needing another duvet cover, or if I know someone who does, I'll definitely use this info ๐ #lifestyle source
