The Charleston is a dance named after the harbor city of Charleston, South Carolina . The rhythm was popularized in mainstream dance music in the United States by a 1923 tune called " The Charleston ," by composer/pianist James P. Johnson , which originated in the Broadway show Runnin' Wild and became one of the most popular hits of the decade… The Charleston dance's peak popularity occurred from mid-1926 to 1927. HERE'S A GEM … a 1937 version by the Quintet du Hot Club de France . “Hot rhythms and energetic riffing by both Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt . At 1:35, Reinhardt starts playing in octaves, a style that Wes Montgomery made famous 20 years later. This recording was not issued on other labels; the issue on the Swing label was its only release. Recorded in Paris, France, on April 21, 1937. Released as Swing 2. Credits: Stéphane Grappelli, violin; Django Reinhardt, Marcel Bianchi, Pierre Barault, guitar; Louis Vola, bass.”
