I’m an EU citizen and have lived here since 2023. I got sick a month into my first job, and they fired me. I received krankengeld while waiting for treatment. This took 1 year. By then, my health was significantly worse and I’d lost all my savings. Krankengeld didn’t cover my rent, so I was losing a big chunk every month.
I have CPTSD and started working with a psychotherapist, but we couldn’t do therapy, since I was constantly on the verge of homelessness. When sick pay ran out I took another job, because I didn’t know what else to do. It was an exploitative job and they had me work for 12 hours with no breaks. After 2 months I just couldn’t do it anymore. My health just collapsed, I developed a physical chronic illness.
I got ALG for a while, but I waited for months with no income while being sent back and forth between Agentur fur Arbeit and Jobcenter. I was hospitalized 4 times during this time. I needed Burgergeld by the time ALG ran out, and my caseworker said I can count on it, because it’s not based on employment history—it’s based on need. I acted in good faith and waited for my Burgergeld application to be processed while resuming therapy. Last month it got denied, because I haven’t worked for long enough, or lived here long enough.
I submitted an appeal, and my therapist helped me document my history in Germany, and wrote that without burgergeld, I won’t be able to continue treatment and return to work. They rejected it. Last time I was the job center, I showed that I have -200 in my bank, and 50 in a different account. They said if I transferred the 50 to the other account, then I am officially “mittellos”, and they will help me. I left that day with no help, now even worse off than before.
I filed an Eilantrag at the Sozialgericht, but they sided with the jobcenter. I had to overdraft my account to keep roof over my head, and am now in debt. I’m too sick to work. I can’t get any help. I can’t pay for health insurance anymore, which means I have to stop treatment.
Preemptive Q&A:
“Why don’t you go back home?” - I have no home. I came here from another country where I was living on a visa. I haven’t lived in my country of birth for a decade.
“Why don’t you ask your family or friends?” - I don’t have any.
“Why don’t you talk to a social worker?” - I’ve been to several. Every time I had waited for my appointment, they just stood me up. One time I even called to clarify what happened and they hung up on me. I decided it was better for my mental state not to deal with these people again.
This is not a rant. I am posting this for 2 reasons:
1. Get suggestions that take the above into consideration (ie: jobcenter won’t help, no country to return to) 2. Show people who always post the glib “just go to X, they will give you Y” that reality is not the same for everyone. #local source
