Will Ding Liren defend the title?
Ding Liren has now withdrawn from six events he had signed up for (if the Asian Games individual and team tournaments count as two separate competitions) over a period of six months, from May to November.
With the title match coming up next year, will he be able go through all the months of hard preparation work that is needed? When will he even play a single game of classical chess again?
The last months Carlsen has played Norwegian League, Qatar Masters, European Club Cup, World Cup and Norway Chess, and will play the European Team Championships two weeks from now. If he couldn’t make himself prepare for another title match, is it possible that also Ding Liren will just resign the title? Maybe also the upcoming Candidates will be one where the top two end up playing the title match.
