The word originates from the war conflicts that began in 1845, climaxing in the battle of "Chemizal", among others, (Mexican territory at that time) on April 25 of that same year, in which the US General Zachary Taylor (whose troops always wore blue uniforms) under the orders of Mr. President, James Knox Polk, for the annexation of Texas as a new state of the Union, would be resoundingly victorious; On the other side, defeated, the Mexican General Mariano Arista (whose troops always wore green uniforms) under the orders of Mr. Interim President, Mariano Paredes Y Arillaga.
Once Texas was annexed as a new southern US territory, entering into a tense diplomatic truce achieved between the two presidents, the US, in its expansionist zeal, proposed to the Mexican state that the territories of New Mexico be sold to it for 15 million dollars. and Alta and Baja California, through which the free passage of Mexican citizens would be allowed. This proposal ended up being totally unacceptable and rejected by Mexico, a pretext used by the United States to definitively and formally declare war on that country on May 25, 1846, a war that would last two years, in which Mexico ends up losing also these territories, managing to seize the US, practically, half of the Mexican territory.
During this confrontation the expression, always with pejorative use, was born from the Americans towards the Mexicans, “GREEN GO HOME”, that is, when translated, “VERDE”, alluding to the green color of the uniforms used by the Mexican troops, “ GO HOME” as a verbal attack ordering the Mexicans to withdraw from the occupied territories. Then, over time and with more contemptuous use, the expression of three words would be reduced to just two, that is, "GREEN GO".
Things of history or ironies of fate, of life, over time, such an expression that was initially used against Mexicans, was "turned" against Americans with equal or greater contempt, simplifying it and even popularizing it phonetically. Since the double “ee” in English, whenever one is followed by the other in the same word, is always, without exception, pronounced like the Latin “i” in Spanish, leaving the initial expression of three words in English. in only one in Spanish, used and known since then and by all of us still today as: "GRINGO", always used with more or less pejorative character depending on the context or circumstances, immortalized over time as title and theme in innumerable literary and cinematographic works of both American and Mexican origin.
