Any Other Frugal Folks Here Who Love Luxury Shopping Malls?
For most of my life, I've lived in major metropolitan areas that are home to luxury shopping malls: big plazas with high-end stores, fancy restaurants, spa services, etc.
What I love about these places is that you can hang out there for free! You can make a day of it and you don't need to spend money if you don't care to.
When I was in graduate school, I used to hang out in one of these shopping centers with my Moviepass (does anyone remember this social experiment before it crashed and burned? Haha.) I would go there, see a movie for a steep discount, and just hang out on the perfectly-curated communal areas, which often included flawless lawns, beautiful flower gardens, tons of shaded seating and free wifi. They pour so much money into these places that walking through makes you feel as if you're on a vacation at a resort on a regular weekend in your hometown!
Today I hopped on the bus and went to another local plaza like this just to window shop and observe people. While I would never buy a $170 dress from Anthropologie, I always enjoy taking in the artistic clothing racks and perusing the products out of curiosity. Though I still think paying $500 for an ice cream machine at Williams Sonoma is crazy, I appreciate the idea of it somehow.
I ended up redeeming a gift card to Starbucks and getting one of their fancy seasonal drinks, then hung out under the shade of an umbrella chair while well-dressed families walked by with kids and dogs. I listened to the sounds of water rushing from a fountain for an hour while I drank my Starbucks and enjoyed my library book. I was even able to use the clean public restrooms without paying for anything or hassling anybody for a code. Then I was back on the bus, which took me on a long scenic route through several lovely neighborhoods until I found myself back home.
